season opener

buff fellow

it was in the seventies today in pittsburgh, and taking full advantage of the warmth of the coming season, i thought it would be a proper season opener for the outdoor flea market nearest me. i seldom go in pursuit of any item in specific, yet rarely leave empty handed; today was no exception. however, todays hunt was ironically fitting for the ending of my weekend. twice this week i had conversations about buffalo, with full knowledge that having a "favorite animal" is not really excepted past the age of, say, eleven. a friend of mine and i love buffalo, a beast she introduced to me during a summer visit to the great salt lake, though i'm sure subconsciously we placed such romance upon these creatures for other reasons. we were ripe out of graduating college, our grande finale adventure before we embarked upon more adult activities: graduate school for her, employment for me. and in a way i think we grasped at these seemingly mythic beasts as an emblem; we came here, we saw things. we have necklaces with buffalo teeth on them, people ask, and are generally unimpressed or blase in reaction. and then i try and explain why they're impressive specimen of the animal kingdom, yet again met with indifference.

Today, with the fleas, however, i met a porcelain figurine of a buffalo. followed by buffalo horns. followed again by one of those children's toys that are usually a stick with a stuffed horse head on top, but instead a buffalo. i think they're catching on...
